Synopsis for Fair Game

Fair Game is an eye-opening thriller with the poaching of large northern game (for Eastern delicacies such as bear gallbladder and wolf eye) at its centre.  The protagonist, Jaimie Ross, is a Natural-History interpreter on a wildlife preserve in the Yukon.  Her low profile position in the thousands of wilderness acres gives her the time she needs to rediscover herself after running from her former life in Toronto.  Jaimie's two closest friends are Franchien (“Fanny”) – a stalwart but eccentric half Metis, half Yupik who is her supervisor and Cody, one of the haughty male wardens.

A car accident on a winding mountain road is an early turning point.  Jaimie meets “Imp”, as he is known - an ironic nick-name seemingly due to his enormous size -  and before long has fallen hard for the “Gentle Giant”.  But much is wrong on the Preserve. Cody and the others frequently discover carcasses of near-extinct species of wildlife, left for the vultures to pluck. Some of the preserve's staff are receiving death threats, others are being framed.  And, though foolishly enchanted at first, Jaimie’s infatuation with Imp turns to paranoid suspicion as she discovers ongoing clues that point directly at the mysterious mountain man.

When Jaimie suddenly disappears, an odd assortment of characters are determined to find her- and the truth.  Fanny, armed with ancient bows-and-arrows and curses in three languages, Cody on his strangely calm stallion, Helen, the preserve’s veterinarian and her fiancé, Kelly - and Curt, Jaimie’s estranged brother and undercover R.C.M.P. officer, all scour the mountain ranges in a vain attempt to rescue her.  For in the end, it is Jaimie herself

and her new-found inner strength, that aid in her release

and help to capture the poachers, and one murdering psychopath.

history of work

Originally begun in the early 1990s, Fair Game  began its life on a typewriter, after 3 months of the author J. Ivanel Johnson living in the Yukon in the depths of winter and experiencing several traitorous relationships. Governor General Literary award-winner Tim Wynne-Jones helped hone the ms. in the mid-1990s, then it was greatly re-written, including additional chapters - and subsequently edited by R. H. Reich in 2019 .

Many elements may remind you of a Dana Stabenow.
